Viper Mad

from Attractions by Cynthia Sayer

/

about

The date kicks off with VIPER MAD, early jazz icon Sidney Bechet’s 1930’s ode to marijuana that gained new popularity in the seventies as the centerpiece of Stash Record’s cult classic Reefer Songs. Sayer, who began singing the song with Woody Allen’s group, has cleverly arranged the piece here to include a somewhat off-kilter feel appropriate to the subject matter. Her banjo and Pizzarelli’s guitar alternate with half-step key changes, the horns trade fives instead of the usual fours and drop a key as the piece slows down at the end to infer the experience of coming down after being high. Sayer’s “rough and ready” vocal style and Robinson’s Bechet-influenced soprano, along with Sandke and Fryer’s fine ensemble playing, help retain the authentic mood.
