Over The Rainbow

from Attractions by Cynthia Sayer

/

about

Sayer’s truly original interpretation of OVER THE RAINBOW, veering far off in her own direction from that of Judy Garland’s archetypal performance of the Harold Arlen-Yip Harburg evergreen, is yet another powerful indicator of her individuality. Again opening by singing a rarely heard verse - following a fanciful banjo-violin-harp introduction (with her sister Susan Taylor making her recording debut on harp) - she uses her rhythmic banjo attack to give the piece an easy swinging feel that is more optimistic than longing, the feeling buoyed by a short happy uptempo banjo interlude. The harp’s return on the out-chorus reinforces the fantasy mood of the piece.
