Half As Much

from Attractions by Cynthia Sayer

/

about

Hank Williams’ HALF AS MUCH may seem like an odd selection for a jazz album (although Helen Merrill and Rosemary Clooney did both record it), but it suits Sayer’s diverse talents well. The sparse, open string trio arrangement of the father of contemporary country music’s signature song, featuring Sara Caswell’s violin and Greg Cohen’s bass with the leader’s banjo, add a sense of vulnerability to the piece which highlights her moving vocal interpretation of the pained lyrics.
